Sharon Johnston Playground Information
Play at Sharon Johnston Park is a small grassroots group of volunteers supported by the Madison County Commission and the Director of Sharon Johnston Park. The Play at Sharon Johnston Park committee raised funds to provide a community-built playground for park patrons. Building the playground during "Build Week", June 15-19, 2011, the committee successfully opened a playground with a tot lot which promotes active play, stimulates imagination, and is accessible to children of varying ages and abilities.
The goal of the committee was to build a new and unique playground in northeast Madison County. Believing children deserve a chance to play independently and with their peers, the playground promotes inclusive play by bringing together children of varying abilities thereby fostering acceptance and friendships. The playground has various spaces that are fun for all children and helps special needs children advance in areas that require additional attention and provide therapy through play.
Winning the "Name the Playground" contest, two local students provided its name. Since its grand opening on June 25, 2011, the playground was dedicated to the community and assumed the official title of PlayStation at Sharon Johnston Park.
The Tillman D. Hill Pavilion is located within the playground. The pavilion is available for party rentals. Pavilion cost is $75.00 for a two hour rental. Rental hours are: 10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.; 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
The pavilion restrooms are closed during the winter months.
Playground maintenance and upkeep is a continuous process. If you and/or your organization would like to volunteer during our "Playground Work Days", please contact the park office at (256) 532-3698 or email at sjpark@madisoncountyal.gov.
