Location: This project consists of two sites. Site 1 is located where Elkwood Section Road crosses Brier Fork Flint River between Treva Lane and Weeks Road. Site 2 is located where Pulaski Pike crosses Beaverdam Creek just north of the Pulaski Pike and Beaver Dam Road/Monroe Road intersection and continues approximately 650 feet to the north.

Project Description: The current bridge railing height at both sites are considerably lower than ALDOT’s detail for new guardrail construction. The proposed project will remove the existing concrete railing, install new steel beam guardrail at the standard height for the entire length of the bridge and add bridge end treatments. A two-foot graded shoulder will also be added to accommodate guardrail leading up to the bridge where steep slopes need protection.

Need for Project:

Site 1 - In recent years, there has been a lot of economic development along Pulaski Pike due to the growth at the North Huntsville Industrial Park and adjacent land. Due to increasing traffic, the concrete bridge railing at this bridge has experienced significant damage due to several crashes. This project has the potential to benefit many people, both local residents and commuters to/from northern Madison County, by implementing a small yet effective safety hazard mitigation project.

Site 2 -  While Elkwood Section road is a local road with low traffic volumes, this road sees a considerable amount of larger vehicles. The narrow roadway, little to no shoulder with steep side slopes, and high truck volume makes this location dangerous.
